What is zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: each year a Muslim gives 2.5% of qualifying wealth that has stayed above the nisab for a full lunar (Hijri) year, to people who are eligible to receive it.

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Many organisations use the silver nisab for cash and mixed wealth, because it is lower and so more people in need benefit.

What should I include?

Cash at home and in the bank, savings, gold and silver, and the value of shares and investment funds. Your home, car, clothes and household items are not included.

Is gold jewellery included?

Scholars differ on jewellery that is worn regularly. The calculator counts what you enter. If you are not sure, ask a qualified scholar.

Where do the gold and silver prices come from?

We update them regularly from published market prices. If you know today’s price, type it in the gold or silver tab and the nisab updates.
